Help Prevent It!

In summary, zebra mussels have drastically impacted Michigan's Great Lakes' ecosystems. This invasive species negatively impacts both the environment and economy in a way that needs to be stopped before our beloved lakes become encrusted. They diminish food sources and re-route nutrients, which all harm the native fish and other aquatic animals. They form sharp clusters and clogg any hard surface available, fouling boat engines, water intake machines, and any water-related equipment. Not only do they harm aquatic wildlife, but also harm human health through blue-green algae blooms. They have spread throughout the lakes as a consequence of our own carless, but we can now work together to fix it.
Since zebra mussels were spread through water vessels, here are a few things you can do to help prevent the spread of these invasive mussels:
1. Contact the state's Department of Agriculture or Department of Natural Resources if you use any chemical against zebra mussel build up
2. Clean any watercraft and other recreational equipment before entering the water (remove all aquatic plants, animals and mud from it)
3. Dispose of leftover or unwanted bait, worms and fish parts in the trash can
4. Rinse and dry boats, motors and trailers thoroughly when you get home.
